Taiwan maintains $25 billion defence budget ahead of China summit

Taipei has indicated that it prefers to avoid drawing attention ahead of the summit with US President Donald Trump and China’s President Xi Jinping.

Under the Taiwan Relations Act, the United States is legally committed to providing Taiwan with the means to maintain its self-defence.

Taiwan has approved a defence budget of $US25 billion, a reduction from previous years, which continues to support the country’s ability to defend itself.
